I get questions from time to time from people saying they think we have similar hair types and asking how or what I do to it. I think this is funny because my hair isn't really any type, it's never in its natural state because it's not straight but not functionally curly either. For this reason I have to use heat on my hair EVERY SINGLE DAY. Which is like, really bad y'all (hence products galore above).
1. I rotate shampoo/conditioner like many of you, and while the Frizz Ease shamp/cond are absolute staples of mine, my salon flavor of the week changes. Right now I'm in love with the Bumble and Bumble Thickening products. It smells awesome and makes my hair feel fuller (even if its only in my head). Karastase is like the LeBron James of conditioners but is expensive as hell, so it only gets used on special occasions or about once a week (if that).
2. Obviously washing your hair every day is not the best idea. I would love it if I could as my hair gets greasy after like twenty seconds but since I also want to still have hair on my head in ten years I make do with dry shampoo every once and a while. This one smells nice, it's inexpensive, and does the job. I find that lux end dry shampoos really don't make a difference for me, so I don't bother. The Nexxus Comb Thru hair spray is the bomb. Keeps everything together but with zero crunch or stickiness. LOVE
3. Again - I beat the CRAP out of my hair so giving it some extra love via moroccan argan oil is the least I can do to make up for it. Lastly, this week I think we all learned what happens if you don't use a heat protectant....THIS NIGHTMARE.
I'm headed to NYC for the next few days for to hang with some of my favorite besties. You can of course follow all of my adventures via the below links if you so please. Have a great weekend!
I'm currently coveting the GAP 1969 camo printed skimmer jeans.
There is something I love about taking a traditionally bad ass thing and making it girly (hence my obsession with spikes and studs). These are totally out of my normal style range but I think they look so awesome paired with everything! Could camo print be the new leopard print?! I don't know but I'm going to try it out.
Here's the deal with this recipe post. It's still freezing here in DC, I have mucho el-bees to drop before the warm weather commences, and I thoroughly enjoy Sunday cooking in all it's cozy ritualistic glory. Enter this amazeballs Kale soup recipe (which is also Paleo for all you crazy kids out there - oh hey!). Delicious, nutritious (rings in at only 173 cals per serving y'all) and a perfect time saver when you make a big Sunday pot and get to have quick homemade dinners all week. DO IT! You know you want to.
Recipe found via the Allrecipes Dinner Spinner Pro app for iPhone.
Ingredients
1 pound spicy Italian sausage links, halved lengthwise
2 large carrots, chopped
1 small onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
6 cups chicken broth
1 cup chopped portobello mushroom caps
1 cup chopped cauliflower
2 cups coarsely chopped kale
1 bay leaf
1/2 teaspoon oregano
1. Heat a large pot over medium heat; cook sausages in the pot until browned, 3 to 5 minutes per side. Remove sausages to a cutting board to cool, reserving sausage drippings in the pot.
2. Cook and stir carrots and onion in the reserved sausage drippings until the onion is translucent, 5 to 7 minutes. Stir garlic into carrot and onion mixture; cook and stir 10 to 15 seconds. Pour the chicken broth into the pot; bring to a boil while scraping the browned bits of food off of the bottom of the pan with a wooden spoon.
3. Return sausages to the broth along with mushrooms, cauliflower, kale, bay leaf, and oregano; stir. Reduce heat to low and cook at a simmer until the vegetables are tender yet firm enough to retain their shape, about 15 minutes. Remove the sausages to the cutting board, cut into 1-inch half-moons, and return to the soup. Simmer together another 5 minutes.

Okay, okay. So I was NOT going to jump on the band wagon and do the whole "get up at the butt-crack of dawn, wait in line, then be beaten down by hoards of bargain crazed women let loose in Target like a bunch of blood thirsty hyenas on red-bull" thing (that's a thing right?) in order to be one of the lucky few who got their hands on Prabal Gurung. No-siree-bob I tell you. Then later in the week Mike says he needs to pop into Target to do some grocery shopping and asks if I'd like to join him. Obviously I do (as no one has the will power to say no to the convenience of Target..dur). I quickly peruse the shoe section and out of the blue these beauties happened to look up at me with such longing desire for me to take them home. It was like they were the last puppy left in the litter. When I bend down to see that they are indeed a perfect 7.5, their fate is sealed. These babies will probably appear in the next eight outfit posts and I don't even feel bad about it.

Ever have one of those days where you don't realize how 80's you look before you walked out the door? I think this qualifies as one of those strange instances. I love these shoes so much and really scoured the internets to see if they were still available anywhere for you guys but was unsuccessful, sorry! I am going through a serious B&W phase recently, and I love every second of it.
..The Michael Kors Pyramid-Stud Wallet
February 20, 2013 • currently coveting Leather michael kors studs wallet
I'm currently coveting the MICHAEL Michael Kors Pyramid-Stud Wallet.
How gorgeous and fun are these wallets? I'm obsessed with the pink one and gifted it to myself on Valentine's Day (sometimes it's necessary with a boyfriend still in law school full time and little income) but also think the white is so fun for the upcoming spring and summer months. The wallet I was previously using was so outdated, I think I've had it since freshman year of college, and was an embarrassment to me and humanity every time I broke it out. I feel so much more polished and grown up as the owner of a new sophisticated-yet-edgy home for my ID's and cashola.
..Afternoon Tea at the Fairmont
February 19, 2013 • afternoon tea fairmont fancy georgetown iconemesis
Warning: this post is only for the extreme girlist. Traditional afternoon tea at a fancy place like The Fairmont in Georgetown is probably one of the most awesome things you can do to indulge your inner princess (oh you know you've got one in there too), there's even a doggie menu!
I was in search of something fabulous to do while my sister was in town and this was the perfect day activity. Everything and everywhere you looked was just draped in gorgeous. Even the mess was beautiful. The teacups were all unique and exquisite, I learned a whole lot about teas and local honey (they make theirs right on the roof), I finally know what a "crumpet" is (it's sort of an ingenious blend of pancake, English muffin, and magic), I tried caviar for the first time, and got to hang out with good people. Tiers of tiny gourmet sandwiches, pastel macaroons, and other delicacies are simply a good time, all the time. I was half expecting the dishes to get up and start dancing around to the "Be Our Guest" song from Beauty and the Beast. Everyone should try it at least once in their lives. You will love it, I promise.

Also - how perfect is my adorable Iconemesis iPhone case for the occasion? I didn't realize until my friend Katie mentioned it, but my little bunny dressed up as a teacup blended right into the decor!

The deets: J.Crew skirt and sequin top; ALDO heels; Andrew Marc New York coat; Steve Madden bag; Ray-Ban sunnies; Lancome "Midnight Rose" lipstick; Essie "Leading Lady" nails; necklace c/o DaisyGem; heart earrings c/o MASSI (hello perfect v-day gift, fellas).
'Tis the week for pink shoes, heart jewelry, bright lips, and sequins! Hope you guys are cashing in on the v-day specials too. Oh who am I kidding 'tis always the week for these things. Am I right folks?
This year will mark the 7th Valentine's Day I've had with my boyfriend, and while we definitely show each other a little extra love and affection on February 14th (usually with treats, flowers, and a nice dinner), it doesn't seem so important now that we live together and get to make each other feel loved every single day (although I still want those flowers, Mike). I decided this year I would focus on some of my favorite ladies in my life, both friends and family, by sending them some love via hand-crafted cards. I think there is just something really sweet and special about getting unexpected snail mail.

February 10, 2013 • Essie express GAP Guess; NastyGal Lancome Outfit Post ray-ban shoemint
The deets: Guess leather jacket; Nasty Gal sweater; Ray-Ban sunnies; Express clutch; Shoemint heels; GAP jeans; Lancome "Wannabe" lipstick; Essie "Leading Lady" nails.
I had a gloriously relaxing weekend that started with a Friday night mani/pedi sesh, followed by a Saturday night date with my man at Filomena's in DC (which was the best restaurant week experience I've ever had), and Sunday was spent taking the dog for long walks and baking cupcakes. Oh, and I got this awesome neon green sweater that makes me happy in a way that only neon green can and these spiked heels are basically my new favorite thing that I own of all time. Bring on the week.
The deets: Express blazer (similar); Rachel Zoe skirt (on maj sale); Nordstrom tee; J.Crew tights; ALDO shoes (old); vintage necklace; Urban sunnies; Steve Madden bag.
For me, nothing is easier for putting together a chic look for work than building my outfit around a skirt. It's really something I do four out of five days a week. This is probably the result of not being able to buy pants online because of the length issue (I'm only 5'2 in flats) and the fact that skirts make me feel a little less like I'm in traditional work attire, which is better for the soul.
I'm currently coveting the "Flying Fox" shower gel by LUSH Cosmetics.
I am a luxury product junkie, so when I read Emily's interview in the Coveteur I knew I had to try out this "Flying Fox" shower gel she was raving about. Turns out, it really is as amazing as she describes. I love the scent of jasmine (like crackhead style, when its around I can't stop sniffing it), it's what makes me stop in my tracks when we pass it on walks with the dog, so this was just right for me. It's aromatherapy in my shower. All natural, lathery, orgasmic, fragrant deliciousness. I keep catching little whiffs of it when I walk around and it makes my mood boost on the spot. I HIGHLY recommend to any and all jasmine lovers.
